It's my great pleasure to introduce myself as a candidate for Judge of the Civil Court in the Ninth Municipal Court District.
I began my legal career as a law clerk to a federal judge in Downtown Manhattan and have been a practicing attorney for over 25 years, including at major national and international law firms.
In private practice, I’ve acquired experience working on many cutting-edge cases. During the
pandemic, I advised clients regarding the legal consequence of COVID-19 in matters headed for
commercial landlord/tenant litigation in Civil Court—unknown legal territory at the time. I also
pioneered credit derivative litigation in matters brought against major banks during the financial
crisis. And in recent years, I’ve litigated defamation cases arising under New York’s newly
amended Anti-SLAPP statute.
I’ve always felt that being a judge is a calling and a sacred trust. I felt drawn to serve the people
of our City as a judge from the first time I stepped foot in a courtroom. New York courts are the
enduring, civilizing force within our Democracy, where parties with disputes—landlords and
tenants, lenders and borrowers, businesses with very large claims and individuals with possibly
more modest ones—can all reliably expect evenhanded, fair application of the law. And because
the Civil Court is often called the “People’s Court,” I felt this was a good place to represent the
court system to our citizens and make a positive contribution to the administration of justice in
our City.
I’ve always been a student of history, and I’ve learned from both my studies and my personal
experience that a single individual can improve our society—and that includes the court system.
Your support for my campaign can make a difference to our City and its citizens. I hope you’ll
agree.
Respectfully,
Terence W. McCormick
